BERNSTEIN - Fancy Free: Three Dance Variations
BEETHOVEN - Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-Flat Major, Opus 73, “Emperor”
PROKOFIEV - Symphony No. 5 in B-Flat Major, Opus 100

IN HONOR OF internationally beloved American Composer Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday and to mark the second year of our American German Cultural Exchange Fellowship, we present an evening that begins with Bernstein’s Fancy Free Variations from the ballet about three sailors on shore-leave in New York City, which premiered to instant popularity in 1944.  Ludwig van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5, nicknamed  “Emperor” is one of his most famous and the final piano concerto he wrote.  A colossal work, it amplifies the virtuosity demanded of the player.  Rising star Danae Dörken, one of the most sought-after soloists of her generation, will captivate with her breathtaking technique, profound musicality, and color-rich sound as part of our American German Cultural Exchange Fellowship, which promotes cultural unity through music.  After catching our breath from Germany’s “poet at the piano,” we launch into Sergei Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, written in Soviet Russia in the span of one month in 1944 at the height of WWII. He intended it to be a hymn to the free and happy man.  It is a powerhouse symphony, which utilizes the full panoply of colors and textures of the orchestra in quintessential Russian style to convey the complete spectrum of the human condition.
