When it comes to charismatic vocal performances, the Land Down Under is taking over.
With over 700 sold-out shows across the U.S. and six Gold and Platinum albums, the Australian singing sensation The TEN Tenors has stolen the hearts of audiences worldwide as an unrivaled group of 10 talented Australian singers, each boasting soaring vocals and dashing stage presence.
Touring the world with this renowned group is exhilarating for Paul Gelsumini, who both performs with The TEN Tenors and serves as tour music director.
With The TEN Tenors headed to The Smith Center on March 6 to perform epic hits by music legends like David Bowie and John Lennon, Gelsumini shares special insights about his career and this impressive group.
I grew up in Melbourne, Victoria in Australia. I graduated from Monash University Conservatorium with a classical music degree, majoring in performance, and I went on to study in Tuscany under the guidance of a Puccini master. I then returned home and completed a music theater course where we covered dance, acting and singing. From there, I auditioned for The Ten Tenors and was successful.
All of the other Tenors come from varying musical backgrounds, which enables us as a group to cover a multitude of repertoire.
The audition process was seamless and testing. I was sent material to learn and then was workshopped through it under different instructions to see how I could deal with adapting to other singers. I learned a lot from this process.
The tenors are a very professional, diligent and patient team. We are always open to experimenting with new sounds while remaining true to our origins. Every tenor has a specialty that they are really great at, and we try to implement these strengths through our shows and albums when we can.
As strong as these individuals are on their own, we are at our best when we are unified. There is nothing like 10 men singing at the height of their ranges all together.
Our schedule can be grueling. Traveling everywhere except New Zealand (which is close) can be tough. This week we travelled over 40 hours to arrive in Berlin for a TV performance.
We are more like a family than work colleagues. Most of the time it feels like you are traveling the world with your nine brothers and then you get to make great music and bring enjoyment to so many people all around the world.
I will never forget singing at Carols in the Domain in Sydney, which is a very large Christmas outdoor concert with an audience of 20,000 people. I think it was special for me because it was home and I really love Christmas!
My favorite arrangement would have to come from our new album, called “Wish You Were Here.” I very much enjoy singing harmony with the group and exploring new sounds, especially as the group is ever evolving and always learning.
The TEN Tenors show has got something for everyone. We really cover a large array of music and genres. You should expect a show with incredible production and complex harmony that cannot be copied.
What happens in Las Vegas stays in Las Vegas….but in short, always.
Easy going, fun and straight up. We hope that we bring a little bit of Australia to you and put a smile on your dials.
