Camp Broadway EXP: Newsies in Training Seize the Day (Camp)

One of the notable initiatives of the Education and Outreach Department at The Smith Center is our partnership with the Camp Broadway organization.

Based in New York City, Camp Broadway is committed to offering authentic (and rigorous) Broadway training in music, acting and dance to children ages 6 to 17. The Smith Center is one of a dozen venues across the U.S. to offer its curriculum.

In early March, our Education and Outreach Department presented Camp Broadway EXP: Newsies in Boman Pavilion. This was an intense, one-day residency that brought together 50 children from the ages of 10 to 17.

The students worked with professional performers including Michelle B. Robinson, a veteran of Broadway stages, and Las Vegas’ own Keith Thompson, musical director of Jersey Boys at Paris Las Vegas.

“This was our first opportunity to offer Camp Broadway EXP. Over the past three summers, we have had great success with our summer Camp Broadway programs. The opportunity to offer Camp Broadway EXP, a one-day workshop themed around the hit musical Disney’s Newsies, attracted many former “campers” as well as introduced several new students to the Camp Broadway programming,” said Candy Schneider, VP of Education and Outreach.”

“We are thrilled with the results of Camp Broadway EXP and look forward to offering this one-day intensive experience based on another Broadway musical in the future,“ added Schneider.

After eight hard hours – with only a few quick snack breaks – the campers were ready. With parents and other family members looking on, the students performed after an introduction of the event by Myron Martin, CEO and President of The Smith Center and an overview by Robinson.

They showcased a dramatic sketch created from material in Disney’s Newsies, the smash hit musical that played in The Smith Center Camp Broadway EXP: Newsies in mid-March.

The short sketch stressed the importance of cooperation and teamwork. Following, the campers performed a medley of songs from Disney’s Newsies and a medley of musical theater hits that included highlights from “Give My Regards to Broadway.”

Following the showcase, the students introduced themselves and enjoyed the audience’s enthusiastic claps and cheers.

Camp Broadway EXP: Newsies is a concentrated preview of The Smith Center’s Camp Broadway this summer. In June, two separate five-day programs will be offered.

Classic Camp will be held June 15-19, and is designed for children between the ages of 10 to 17. These are full-day sessions. The following week brings Shining Stars Camp June 22-26. These are half-day programs ( morning and afternoon sessions are offered) specially created for participants between the ages of 6 to 9. Both programs are designed to build confidence, inspire creative expression, and instill well-being in both aspiring artists and future audiences.

Registration is currently open for Camp Broadway Classic Camp and Shining Stars Camp.
