Heart of Education Nominations to Open in November

Friday, October 14, 2016.

Know a local teacher making a difference in students’ lives? Someone who goes above and beyond to put kids first and not only teach, but also inspire?

Many teachers like this in our community serve as unsung heroes, deserving more thanks from the people of Clark County.

Now you have an opportunity to provide just that.

In November, The Smith Center will open the nomination period for its 2017 Heart of Education Awards, designed to recognize exceptional local educators.

Thanks to support from program sponsor The Rogers Foundation, hundreds of nominated educators will be honored at an invitation-only event in April 2017 at The Smith Center.

The prestigious evening will feature a red carpet, swag bags for all of the invited teachers, and spectacular entertainment. Twenty winners will each receive a cash gift of $5,000 and a trophy. Each winner’s school will also receive a cash gift of $1,000 to be used for a program selected by the winning teacher.

In addition, the Las Vegas Review-Journal will award three People’s Choice Awards amounting to $10,000, with 1st place receiving $5,000, 2nd place $3,000 and 3rd place $2,000.

“I always say that education is in our DNA at The Smith Center. There are so many teachers working tirelessly in our community, and the Heart of Education program helps us honor the impact they have,” says Myron Martin, CEO and president of The Smith Center. “We enjoyed receiving the heartwarming stories of educators nominated in 2015, and we look forward to seeing many more this year.”

A teacher awards program at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is credited with helping to retain and recruit great teachers in Washington, D.C., which inspired The Smith Center to offer such recognition in our own community.

The inaugural event for the Heart of Education Awards in May 2016 saw tremendous community support, with more than 1,000 local educators nominated for the awards.

As a result of the generous support of The Rogers Foundation, The Smith Center will be able to host The Heart of Education Awards for many years to come.

We look forward to receiving your nominations. Good luck to all of the deserving teachers!
