Registration Now Open for Camp Broadway at The Smith Center

Southern Nevada Kids to Build Confidence and Teamwork at Camp Broadway Summer Youth Theater Camp

Shawn Hemphill admitted he felt “really nervous” the first time he walked into The Smith Center’s Camp Broadway youth theater camp in July 2018. “I didn’t know anybody,” the Las Vegas teenager said. But within a matter of hours of participating in the camp’s workshops, which teach singing, dancing and acting, Hemphill was already connecting with new friends and feeling inspired with his own abilities. “Now I’m not nervous,” he said with a grin later in the day, after sashaying through new choreography with other Las Vegas teens. “I feel more confident in myself, like I can do it.”

This kind of confidence building and collaboration are exactly what Camp Broadway at The Smith Center is all about. The Smith Center has opened up registration for its Camp Broadway program this July, with a total of 150 openings available for children and teenagers across two weeklong, age-appropriate camps. Focused on ensemble training and performances, this program provides Southern Nevada youths with the opportunity to learn from top industry professionals. Participants don’t necessarily need to love the performing arts to enjoy themselves and benefit from the camp, which focuses on nurturing teamwork, creativity and social skills.

“We truly see campers blossom each year as they build confidence, make new friends and discover what they’re capable of achieving,” said Louisa Lemos, director of the camp’s annual Family Finale. “The overall goal is to develop their character and build skills they can use throughout their lives.”

Two Camps Put On Real Shows

Camp Broadway at The Smith Center includes the Shining Stars Camp, with half-day sessions for children ages 6 to 9, and the Mainstage Camp, with full-day sessions for youths ages 10 to 17. Both programs conclude with campers performing musical productions for friends and family, with the Mainstage campers performing on stage in The Smith Center’s Reynolds Hall. “You get to learn a musical in five days, and you learn dance numbers and get acting experience,” said Las Vegas teenager Hannah Rosenfeld. The excitement of learning a new production just like a professional performer kept her coming back to Camp Broadway for six consecutive years. “I’ve made lifelong friends (at Camp Broadway),” she said.
