NATHAN TANOUYE Desert Flight (world premiere)
BARBER Concerto for Violin, Op. 14
SIBELIUS  Symphony No. 1 in E minor, Op. 39

Music that encapsulates time and place features in this evocative program celebrating Jean Sibelius’s 100th birthday. The Finnish composer’s first symphony illustrates his heartfelt tonal palette allowing the listener to experience the glories of his natural world. Samuel Barber’s violin concerto performed with Alexi Kenney–a young artist of uncommon depth, poise and instinct–conjures echoes of the turbulent 1930s. The world premiere of Desert Flight, a sprightly ode to Southern Nevada’s own landscape composed by principal trombonist Nathan Tanouye, launches the celebration.
