His mastery of stringed instruments, exceptional picking style on slack key guitar and ‘ukulele, and his extraordinary vocal range -- baritone to leo ki`eki`e (falsetto), have made him a musical legend. He has been named a NEA National Heritage Fellow, and has won multiple Nā Hōkū (Hawai‘i’s “Grammy”) awards including, Favorite Entertainer, Best Slack Key, and Best ‘Ukulele. Kaapana has also earned four Grammy nominations in his own right, and three Grammy wins on slack key compilations. As Hawai’i’s Hana Hou Magazine notes, he is “Jus’ Bes’.”
