What is “Sankofa”?
Sankofa is an African word from the Twi language of Akan tribe in Ghana that translates to "Go back and get it.” Sankofa is often associated with the proverb, "Se wo were fi na wosankofa a yenkyi," which translates as: "It is not wrong to go back for that which you have forgotten.

One of the symbols of Sankofa is a mythical bird that has its head turned back towards the lessons of the past, a valuable egg (the promise of the future) within its mouth and its legs firmly facing forward as it flies. The bird represents the need to reflect on the past to build a successful future.

“Sankofa: a Musical Celebration of Black History” is a reflection of those lessons and a vibrant celebration of the richness of African American culture, as we move forward towards a proud, bold and bright future. Don’t miss this outstanding program of music starring Michelle Johnson and some of the brightest names in Las Vegas entertainment.
